PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Welcome
CIS Sports Program
Considering the limited number of
students at Cebu International School (CIS), the academic workload, the
expense of travel, and the lack of availability of local venues the CIS
program is quite full and services the entire school population whether on
varsity or school teams, during club activities and/ or during house sports
days. The Sports programs are designed with the School Wide Learning Goals
and the development of the “whole-child” in mind.
The CIS High School revolves around a
“3-season” sports program, including: boy’s and girl’s volleyball (November
ISAC meet), boy’s football and girl’s basketball (January ISAC meet), and
girl’s football and boy’s basketball (April ISAC meet). The High School
teams participate in a local area “Mini-League” which CIS runs for
basketball and volleyball prior to, and in preparation for, the ISAC
tournaments.
Basketball and Volleyball are
burgeoning programs at CIS with an ever-increasing number of participants.
CIS placed first overall in the International Schools Activities Conference
last year. The Conference has eight International Schools from all over the
Philippines competing 3 times a year in 3 different sports at 3 different
venues.
The Middle School follows the same
seasons with culminating events in November (Inter-Island Tournament- 13 and
under) and April (Inter-Island Tournament- 11 and under) which are CIS
initiatives.
The Cebu Football association (CFA)
runs local tournaments throughout the year which necessitates a year long
football program at CIS. The football program runs in the background meshing
into the seasonal and club programs. CIS also participates, annually, in the
“Alaska Cup” which is the largest football tournament in the Philippines. On
average CIS brings between 8 and 10 teams to the 240-team Alaska Cup.
The Sports Program also encompasses
after-school clubs program. Several of our clubs lead students to
competitions across the country, including; Rock climbing, Swimming, Tennis,
and others.
CIS has amassed a respectable trophy
list over the past years. The trophies are not the indicators of the
sporting programs success; rather, the fact that our students participate in
so many tournaments in such a wide variety of sports reflects a broad
program. CIS encourages all children to play/ participate and, through
policy, ensures that anyone interested gets opportunity to play/
participate. Even at the ISAC level, all players on the teams get to play in
every game!
The Physical Education program
encourages and promotes mass participation. Students evaluated based on
participation and improvement and not solely on their base skill level. The
school and class sizes remain small enough that teachers are intimately
familiar with their students and can motivate students on a personal level.
This mindset encourages students to play on CIS representative teams which,
in-turn, encourages socialization, sportsmanship, and skill level
development.
All the components of the Physical
education/ Sports programs combine to create a successful and happy
atmosphere in which the students are willing to explore their abilities in a
safe and comfortable atmosphere. The students are set up for success and
enjoyment which promotes positive self-esteem and creates and environment
where the children may enjoy sports and health for life.
