English (Pre-School to Grade 12)
The English Department presents students with opportunities to engage with and develop the key competencies (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in diverse contexts. Students are encouraged to become effective communicators who employ critical thinking skills. They will develop the skills to express themselves with clarity, coherence and confidence.
The goal of the ESL Program is to help ESL students with the language of academic English in all subject areas. (ESL is offered up the end of Grade 9 at which point students are expected to be mainstreamed in order to be adequately prepared for the final years of school). Teachers differentiate for depth of content, learning tasks and assessment tasks so that ESL students can achieve the same learning outcomes as mainstream students.
