CIS - Teacher Expectations

CIS - Teacher Expectations

CIS – TEACHER EXPECTATIONS

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
  • Honesty and transparency the ability to approach colleagues and administrators if they have a problem with them, be open and honest with their issue and make a genuine attempt to resolve it at an initial level first, before moving to the next step.
  • If you are unhappy, or upset or angry about something that has happened in the school, you are expected to be able to communicate that with the appropriate person. Not to sit and ponder on it and let it fester and eat away. Deal with it and resolve it.
  • Verify anything you hear – don’t just accept that something is true.
  • Teachers with the ability to recognize that we will not all agree all the time, and respectful of the processes in place, the decision making structure and supportive of decisions made in such a way.
  • Publicly supportive of colleagues, the school and their administrators to all others.
  • Confidentiality
  • The ability to plan and work collaboratively with other teachers and the initiative to do it.
  • Excellent organizational skills so that you can meet deadlines and not disadvantage others due to your own tardiness.
  • Work hard, but know how to relax.
  • Reflective teachers who constantly look for ways to improve their practice.
  • Be comfortable in communicating your thoughts and give input.
  • Two sound guidelines; if you don’t have something nice to say about someone, don’t say it and if you don’t hear it/see it for yourself, then go straight to the source to find out for yourself.
CLASSROOM
A positive classroom environment that is marked by ROCS (Respect for Others, Community and Selves).
1. ROCS clearly posted in the classroom, and student understandings on what this means in practice on display.
2. TEAM – Together We Achieve More. Again, posted in the classroom and understandings from the students on what this means in practice on display.
3. KIDS – school wide learning goals. So, the poster is not only up in the classroom, but it is actually used by the teachers so the students know what we are trying to achieve as far as our goals for them.
4. MISSION STATEMENT – again, the same requirement. It is up in every classroom (if you have not got it, then see the Grounds and Facilities Manager) and please use it in your teaching. Link your teaching with these resources.
5. IB LEARNER PROFILE – we need to see the 10 attributes clearly displayed in the classroom. Again, with student understandings as to what they mean at their level.
6. Student work, current for the quarter, is to be displayed.
7. Classrooms are to be well organized in appearance, as well as clean and tidy.
TEACHER NON-NEGOTIABLES
1. When students are in the classroom/class environment, you are actively engaged in teaching them and we are seeing not only student-teacher interaction, but also teacher movement – this means that we should not see a teacher working on their computer or marking work when students are in the class environment. We need to see active engagement in the teaching process.
2. Student safety is a priority, therefore your eyes and ears must be alert at all times when you are with a class.
3. Teachers need to initiate and follow up students who need extra help – use breaks and after school to provide help to the students in your class. Require them to attend if you believe it is necessary, but ensure you notify home through phone contact or a note in the diary (to be acknowledged and signed by the parent) or an email home (receipt to be acknowledged) – maintain communication with parents.
4. The NO SURPRISE tenet - Keep parents notified and keep your line manager notified. Prevention is better than dealing with an issue after it has erupted smiley
5. Write curriculum according to the UbD format and regularly (at least weekly) update your curriculum documentation on Rubicon Atlas. In your curriculum documentation we need to see the links with the IB Learner Profile, the CIS mission and vision, and ROCS. See annual curriculum goals for more details.
6. Forward planning of curriculum (weekly planners to be submitted in Elementary, detailed unit plans to be submitted in MHS)
7. Read and understand the CIS Assessment Policy and procedures. Implement the assessment practices in your teaching.
8. Be passionate about your vocation.
9. Know when you need help and ask for it.
10. Professionalism, do not personalize issues smiley
There are many things that can be taught, but you cannot teach a work ethic, or passion for their job – this is what CIS needs.
If you have a strong work ethic (with an ability to laugh smiley) and you have a passion for teaching and wanting to make a difference to children’s lives, then CIS is the school for you.
We have further information available to all new hires, such as Teacher Requirements with loading etc and Annual School goals.  The Annual school goals are directly linked to our CIS Philosophy, vision, mission and statement of core beliefs.
