ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE : Grades 1-12

The school offers a comprehensive and challenging program designed to develop and enrich an individual's communicative competence. The aim of the ESL program is to teach English to students who are non-native speakers or who have a limited knowledge of English. The curriculum is designed to improve a student's communicative competence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Classes focus primarily on the teaching of literacy skills, such as, reading and writing. Other classes, such as, science and social studies, teach language through content-based instruction. All classes target the development of listening and speaking skills.

Depending on the student's level of proficiency, an ESL student in the Elementary School adheres to the following program:

By offering both integrated and sheltered classes, the aim of the program is to address and meet the language, academic and social needs of the ESL students. Integration provides ESL students with opportunities to interact socially as well as academically with grade level peers. Sheltered instruction enables the teacher to deliver content material at a level appropriate to the students' language proficiency. As students progress through school, expectations for achievement increase. Students are required to learn content through English so that they can compete academically with their peers. Sheltered instruction is an essential component of the program so that students attain the content and skills to construct and apply knowledge in both spoken and written form. At appropriate times throughout the course of their ESL program, students transition into and participate in mainstream classes at their appropriate grade level. During this transitional 37 phase of instruction, the students continue to receive essential English language support until they fully enter the mainstream instructional program.

Tutorials

After school tutorials are a part of every ESL student's program. The one-on-one sessions are conducted on campus, and the work covered during each session supports the expected learning outcomes in both language development and content areas. The sessions also aid in monitoring student progress as well as identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
